Eruption style transition during the 2017–2018 eruptive activity at the Shinmoedake volcano, Kirishima, Japan: surface phenomena and eruptive products

چکیده
Abstract Recent eruptions of the Shinmoedake volcano, Japan, have provided a valuable opportunity to investigate transition between explosive and effusive eruptions. In October 2017, phreatic/phreatomagmatic explosions occurred. They were followed in March 2018 by phase hybrid activity with simultaneous lava flows then intermittent, Vulcanian-style explosions. Evolution surface phenomena, temporal variations whole-rock chemical compositions from representative eruptive material samples, rock microtextural properties, such as crystallinity crystal size distribution juvenile products, are analyzed characterize eruption style transition, conduit location, shallow magma conditions volcanic edifice. The 2017–2018 event is also compared preceding 2011 explosive–effusive eruption. textural properties products (two types pumice, ballistically ejected blocks, massive lava) distinct cooling ascent processes. initial erupted during dome formation, has groundmass up 45% highest plagioclase number density all (1.9 × 10 6 /mm 3 ). Observations of eruptive activity at Santiaguito volcano, Guatemala
The study of active vent dynamics is hindered by the difficulty of directly observing features and processes during eruptive periods. Here, we describe some recent observations of the summit dome activity of Santiaguito volcano, Guatemala, from the vantage point of its parent, Santa Marı́a. We have taken 12 h of digital video of activity over a 3-year period, which includes 28 eruptions and nume...
متن کاملProbabilistic modeling of eruptive activity at Etna volcano using InSAR surface displacements and ATSR thermal radiance
[1] Satellite monitoring offers a powerful means to regularly characterize the mechanical and thermal states of active volcanoes. Satellite-measured surface inflation and radiant heat flux reflect the pressurization and discharge, respectively, of a magmatic system, suggesting that studying these parameters together may help in better understanding future eruptive activity. We incorporate InSAR...

Volcanism in Iceland in historical time: Volcano types, eruption styles and eruptive history
The large-scale volcanic lineaments in Iceland are an axial zone, which is delineated by the Reykjanes, West and North Volcanic Zones (RVZ, WVZ, NVZ) and the East Volcanic Zone (EVZ), which is growing in length by propagation to the southwest through pre-existing crust. These zones are connected across central Iceland by the Mid-Iceland Belt (MIB). Other volcanically active areas are the two in...
